Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I want to become a client but I don't have a referral or invitation?

No worries! Fill out our screening form and we’ll let you know if we feel like we can serve you. We don’t accept everyone but mostly for you! It just means we think someone else in the community would be a better fit. We have TONS of community partnerships and can find refer you to a trusted practitioner in the area.

*NEW CLIENT appointment requests require prior screening form and virtual consultation before booking.

  • Why is your location secret?

We keep our location private for our safety and yours. We are located on private property and since we predominantly serve the LGBTQ+ and POC communities we choose to only allow vetted people into the space. When you come to our space, you can feel confident that you are surrounded by good people that mean no harm. Once you have been vetted, you will be given instructions and the address to enter the space. Think of it as a speakeasy :)

  • Do you have a mental health focus?

Yes. We are a diverse group of people, everyone at Benders has our own experiences with mental health. Rather than masking, we choose to work with our different abilities.

Each of our artists has a safety plan in case of mental health, spiritual or physical emergencies.

We encourage you to share those with before or upon arrival. We also have many services aimed toward healing and coping with mental health and traumas.

  • Do you only work on the LGBTQ+ community?

Not at all! We work on everyone. The difference is, we use language that is inclusive and competent to the LGBTQ+ community.

In a world where queer community often feels the need to conform, we choose to have a space where we get to speak freely. This means we talk about race, gender, relationships, mental health, sexual health and politics. If that is something you’re into, there is space for you regardless of how you identify.

  • Is Benders a hair salon?

    No.

We do not consider ourselves just a hair salon but we are licensed cosmetologists. Our inspiration goes back to the original concept of a 'salon,' but with a modern twist. We operate outside traditional business norms and focus on unique connections.

We're a community art space where some of us use hair art and haircutting as our creative outlet, and we're always looking for people to be our canvas. We have a diverse group of artists who practice various forms of art, such as healing arts, painting, singing, podcasting, indigenous rituals, gardening, herbalism, and much more.

  • Why do you identify as a brave space rather than a safe space?

Because there is no way of knowing what may trigger someone from day to day, moment to moment. Therefore, we can’t realistically guarantee safety, . Instead, we encourage autonomy, courageousness, and compassionate curiosity during communication.

If something or someone triggers you in our space, we ask you to advocate for yourself and ask for what you need. We choose to speak to the empowered part of people rather than their victimhood.

We like to move through our space assuming positive intent and are VERY open to feedback. We ask for you to be open to feedback as well, (especially if you are a white person).

  • Why are your prices optional?

We are against both capitalism and some established systems. To us, being anti-capitalist doesn't mean we reject all aspects of the way our country works, we just try to do the least amount of damage as possible.

We believe in cooperative ownership as part of a broader effort for economic change. As a collective of artists, we pursue our passions at a fair and negotiable cost, with optional pricing to maintain our anti-establishment approach. This means we resist established norms, values, and institutions in society, especially in politics, social matters, and economics.

Our viewpoint questions traditional authority, power structures, and cultural norms and we realize it is a privilege to be able to push these boundaries. We ask for your support by talking to us about this narrative during your visit.
